Solo Certification Requirements


1. When the instructor feels the student has absorbed all the training criteria of which he is capable, a Solo Certification Proficiency demonstration will be scheduled.

2. The Instructor will contact another board-approved instructor and advise him a student be scheduled to solo.

3. The two instructors and student will agree on a time and date for the flight proficiency demonstration.

4. The student in the presence of both instructors must demonstrate flight proficiency in the following areas:

a. Two (2) take-offs and landings using left hand traffic pattern. On the runway to a full stop.

b. Two (2) take-offs and landings using right hand traffic pattern. On the runway to a full stop.

c. One loop.

d. One stall and safe recovery.

e. Simulated dead-stick landing (engine at idle). Instructor will advise the student when to throttle back to idle, with the aircraft at a distance, altitude and heading sufficient to perform this task safely, if proper judgment is exercised by the student. Student will call out "Dead-Stick" to the instructors

f. Safe taxi procedures during demonstration i.e. Taxiing out to the asphalt taxi strip, allow the model to come to a complete stop, check down wind and final for the approach of another aircraft, there being none shall call out "Take-Off". At this time taxi out onto the concrete runway and do so when ready.
5. Demonstrate safe procedures during engine start to engine shut down.

6. Follow Club Rules and Policies in accordance with the Constitution and Code of Conduct.

a. Proper impounding of transmitter.

b. Proper use of frequency channel flags, checking to make sure no one is on your frequency, pinning the correct flag up and putting it down after a flight.

c. Proper use of the wind sock, physical & visual indication of wind direction before take-off.

d. All airborne maneuvers performed North of the runway.

e. No flying, including take-offs South of the Concrete Runway edge, nor South of the Pilot Station to infinity.

f. Engine shut-down before reaching white line on taxi-way to the pit area.

g. During engine start, the aircraft is in the proper place, pointed in the proper direction and not inside the pit area.
7. The instructor should have taught/demonstrated the student the proper procedures and much of this demonstration displays the knowledge the student has acquired and can apply, to ensure the student is a safe and conscientious pilot.

8. Upon completion of the solo demonstration, the instructors must agree the demonstration was satisfactory and therefore certified for solo. The instructor will advise a club officer of the satisfactory solo providing students full name, instructor and date of solo. who shall then pass this information on to the person making up the solo certificate. A solo certificate will be prepared using this information.

In the event an instructor does not agree the solo demonstration was satisfactory, that instructor must explain the reason/s for not certifying the flight.

If the primary instructor disagrees with the observing instructor, he may appeal the decision to a board member if that person witnessed the solo demonstration..

9. Student pilots certified to solo flight shall receive a certificate signed by the primary instructor and the president of the club. Will be presented by the instructor to the student at a general membership meeting.

10. The student may begin flying solo immediately after the agreement by the parties involved that the student is certified..
